A few important Interlibrary Loan updates and reminders

Website Updates

The ILL page on the IFLS website has been updated with contact information and links to relevant articles for quick reference. Please take a moment to review this page.

ILL Paging Slips

We have updated the ILL Lending Your Items (ILL Holds) article to include a new EXAMPLE of a typical ILL paging slip and exceptions to watch for.

• • Please take a moment to review the paging slip examples, noting these important reminders:
  • Always check out ILL items to ILL patrons in Sierra (do not place ILL items in transit)
  • Always review the note field on the paging slip for any special instructions including delivery hub information, mailing instructions, or due date changes
  • We strongly encourage all libraries to PRINT the paging slip examples and place them near workstations where ILL paging slips are processed. We hope this will help staff remember the correct procedure for processing ILL paging slips and ensure that items are checked out and sent to the right destination.

Out-of-System Courier Flags

We have updated the Guidelines for Sending ILL Items via Courier article to include the following:

• A new EXAMPLE of a pink out-of-system courier flag showing how to fill out the flags correctly before sending items out in the courier
• A new ILL System Delivery Hub Abbreviations list, which includes some additional reminders about the system delivery hub abbreviations found in the note field of ILL paging slips
• We strongly encourage all libraries to PRINT both the flag example and abbreviation list and place them near workstations where ILL items are prepared for the courier. We hope this will help staff remember the correct procedure for sending ILL items in the courier and ensure they are sent to the right destination.

If you can take a few minutes to fill in the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) survey, it will help the national organization create materials that are better and more relevant to libraries using them!

• One survey per library, but people from different areas of the library can complete the sections relevant for them (children, teen, or adult programs).
• Even if you didn’t use All Together Now as your theme, your input is valuable.
• Wait till your summer program has wrapped up to complete the questionnaire, but feel free to skip questions for which you don’t have answers!

I am mulling over a few options for Youth Services Continuing Education in the next year and would appreciate your input.  Please give me your opinions by August 30 by filling out this quick and dirty survey.  I am looking to get the temperature of the room before I begin planning.  If you would like to have a conversation with me about this to clarify your answers, I am super interested in that, as well!

What happens now?

1. Reb will send the prizes through courier next week. She’s posted this on the website and on social media.
2. Reb will send the contact info she has for the winners to the director of their home library. I’d suggest that you contact the parent of kids. Please call your prize winners and let them know when their prize arrives. Reb sure would appreciate pictures, if possible!
3. The adult and teen grand prizes include a gas card. Reb willl call them to get a preference.
4. The adult grand prize includes a park pass. Reb will contact the winnerl to see if they want a pass for the remainder of 2023 or would prefer to wait for a 2024 pass. Those passes usually come out in late November.

Scholarship applications for the Association for Rural and Small Libraries Conference (September 20-23 in Witchita, KS) and the Library Journal and School Library Journal Library Management Course (8 weeks, October 17- December 5) are due tomorrow! Details on the calendar.

New on the calendar: The Art of Conflict Transformation

This workshop will be offered TWICE, in two locations: Northwoods Tech College Conference Center in Rice Lake (Sep 27) and CVTC Energy Education Center in Eau Claire (Sep 28). Space is limited for this workshop which will provide 6.5 contact hours for director certification. Register by September 20.

To continue and enhance the learning, please mark your calendars for one of three follow-up practice sessions (facilitated by trained IFLS staff): November 2, 3, and 8.  We’ll determine location of the follow-up sessions based on participation in the original workshop.  Look for more information and registration information coming once you register for the workshop!
