ILL Tip of the Week
Reminder: ILL requests should always be checked out to the requestor’s Sierra account – never placed in transit! This allows for accurate tracking and updating of ILL requests.
Best practices: patron names
Joan from Cumberland asked: Could you provide a refresher about patron names in the patron record? I am specifically interested in best practices for patrons with preferred names that aren’t their legal names. Example: children with parents who have 2 different last names or members of the LGBTQIA+ community who have preferred names.
Lori Roholt answered: There’s an article in the Article Index about MORE’s current practice with names in patron records.
Keep in mind that the top name is the one patrons will see on email or print circulation notices, and when they register their account in the main MORE Catalog. Other names included in a patron record are searchable by staff in Sierra but generally not visible to the patron, so they work well as match points (legal names, former names, etc.)
Confused about Bar Codes?
- Bar codes are always 14 numbers.
- The first five numbers generally start with 20 and end with your library’s local phone exchange.
- The second four numbers can be used to accommodate lots of accounts (for instance, my card from Menomonie is xxxxx-0004-xxxxx), or to skip over a series of numbers to avoid duplicates.
- In the last group is five numbers only the first four are your barcode series numbers.
- The very last number is random, and is added to provide extra security. You don’t consider that very last number when figuring out your ending number.
Annual library card bulk order
IFLS creates a bulk order opportunity for library cards, which is a cheaper option for ordering cards. All libraries need to reply to this form whether or not you’re ordering so that we don’t miss anybody. The form is due by the end of the day on Monday, October 23. All the details are at the in the form. Directors will also receive an email from Reb Kilde and questions can go to Reb at kilde@ifls.lib.wi.us.
Nominations
Two library journal award nominations are closing soon.
The Movers and Shakers award recognizes up-and-coming individuals from around the world who are innovative, creative, and making a difference fighting against censorship, and helping improve their workplace. It is open to librarians and non-degreed library workers. Submissions will close on October 23, 2023.
Library Journal Librarian of the Year Award, sponsored by Baker & Taylor, to honor a professional librarian for outstanding achievement and accomplishments reflecting the loftiest service goals of the library profession. Nomination postmark or emails deadline is NOVEMBER 6, 2023.
Correction: staff explorer
Alyssa Brown is an even more awesome library explorer than you thought! She visited 50 libraries, not the 43 noted in last week’s Digest. Staff explorers received a commemorative lanyard pin and a certificate. Prize drawing winners will be announced next week.
CSLP 2024 manual is now available
This manual is to help libraries with programs for all ages, including adults, and it is chock-full of program ideas, marketing materials (including illustrations by Juana Martinez-Neal), booklists, and more.
The Department of Public Instruction uses LSTA funding to provide access to the CSLP Manual for each of the 381 public libraries in Wisconsin.

A little gorgeous book history
The Guild of Women-Binders was active for only six years in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and promoted and trained women in the bookbinding trade. The books are stunning. Have a great weekend!
