Thanks to Tanya Misselt, director of the River Falls Public Library for today’s edition of PLA Takeaways!

I spent a fair amount of time at the NewsBank exhibit and intend to follow-up to get a quote for a subscription.

I got the most out of two AI presentations:

  • AI Book Clubs and Digital Literacy for Older Adults

The presenter was Autumn Hassett. I appreciated Autumn’s approach to integration of AI rather than only AI instruction. To make it more interesting, they focused on banned books and explored issues relating to that. She starts her programs by teaching basic skepticism and evaluation of credibility of response. She also warns patrons not to put anything personal on an AI platform. She also provides a list of free AI tools. I did follow-up with the presenter after PLA to get a copy of her list.

  • Trust & Verify: Information Accuracy in the Age of SEO, AI, and Algorithms

The presenter was Nathaniel Burnard. This was the first time I had heard the term “Search Engine Optimization”.  I plan to download a free short course provided by MIT – Open Courseware called Media Literacy in the Age of Deepfakes.
