We got a question on the youth services list this week about resources to help kids learn more about and process the current events around ICE and to learn more about immigration and immigration. Thanks to those who responded, and to the Northern Waters Library Service for an earlier communication that alerted us to some of these resources. Here is what is collected so far, if I learn of more I will update this blog post.
The Glendale Public Library provided these articles linked below, which offer ideas to better prepare families for conversations with children about immigration and ICE.
- How to Talk to Children About ICE and Immigration (FamilyWorks Seattle)
- Talking to Kids About Immigration Enforcement in Their Communities (Children’s Hospital Los Angeles)
- For Kids: What to Do If You’re Worried About ICE (Children’s Network of Solano County)
Bibliocommons lists created by library staff:
- From the St. Paul Public Library: Talking with Children and Teens about Immigration (includes a booklist but also several other resources to help with difficult conversations or to process violent events.
- From the Kenosha Public Library: Talking with Kids about Scary Current Events
- From the River Falls Public Library: Picture Books about Immigration and Race
